Ok i want a new video card, i currently have 2x 8800gts 640Mb and want to upgrade them, i have been out of the tech loop for a while and if im honest im a little lazy and pressed for time to researh this fully lol.
I can get hold of 2x 8800 ultras for around 200 bucks each , but im not sure if its worth it and im not sure what todays cards are like. My system is Intel 6800 extream Asus 680i mobo 2GB OCZ ram and a 22" and 32" screen. And advice would be appreciated. |

Depends on how much you want to spend...
If you have the money get what I got, the ATi 5870, 2 x DVI, 1 x HDMI & 1 x Display Port. Can run 3 display of the one card, 1gb of DDR5 memory. DX 11 (not that many games use it but hey.. With the new games coming out this year I would personally look at the more mid to towards the top end cards currently available to last you the next few years or more. Really does depend on what you want to spend.

Wombat to run on nVidia chipset I think you should stick with SLI, don't even think they support crossfire?
I have 2 x GTX 260 in SLI but depending on price you can go up or down from here. The GTS250 has roughly equivalent performance of the 9800GTX for pretty low prices so might be a good option for SLI on a tight budget. The card Radar mentions is a damn good card though, but as I said I don't think it will let you crossfire if you get two?

you will be far better off buying a single more powerful card than going down the SLI route, particularly if u are going to use lower end cards.
tbh i think SLIing GTS250's is a waste of money, considering you could find better performance for the same $$ in a single card. If you are happy to spend then the ATI 5870 at around $530 is the card to get at the moment.. on the nvidia front the same money will get you a GTX295. Nearly all the reviews place these cards as fairly equal. Last edited by samo : 15-02-2010 at 01:38 PM. |

Wombat. the new ATI cards and Cross fire will be the best bang for buck. But can they run in crossfire on a SLI board?

I didn't realise SLI or Crossfire had anything to do with the motherboard? Does it require support by the motherboard chipset or something?

Sure does mate. SLI is nVidia and Crossfire is ATI. Until the most recent chipsets Intel motherboards only supported Crossfire and nVidia motherboard chipsets supported only SLI. The 680i chipset on your motherboard is an nVidia chipset and only supports SLI with two nVidia chipset video cards.
